FLORA - FAUNA AND ECOTOURISM
IN ÇANAKKALE

Flora

Flora describes the types of vegetation in an area and if the differentiations in the varieties of the vegetation in that area are very special, limited and peculiar these are called endemic. Turkey is also special and very rich in terms of its endemic vegetation.
Çanakkale is one of the most heavily forested regions in Turkey, with 54 percent of the province listed as forestry land. In particular, Mount Ida contributes to this richness. The highest numbers of Turkish endemic types are to be found on and around Mount Ida, which has resulted in its air having the highest oxygen content in Turkey. This in turn has a positive impact on the variety of vegetation to be found.
There are 21 varieties of vegetation that are only to be found on Mount Ida (the Mount Ida endemics). However, the Abies Equi Trojani, a type of pine tree endemic to the Mount Ida region has a particular importance. This type of pine tree that only grows on hillsides to the north east of Babada_ at altitudes above 1,000-1,500 metres has had its habitat declared a protected zone. Most of the endemic types of Turkey also grow on Mount Ida.
Mount Ida and Çanakkale in this respect have all that is required for eco-tourism, which is seen as the future of tourism, though which is a relatively new development in Turkey.
For other types of outdoors activities (trekking, hunting, bird and vegetation watching, horse riding and mountain biking and so forth) Çanakkale and Mount Ida are among Turkey's best locations and ones that are drawing increasing attention.
